| Customs rap ministers |

CUSTOMS men launched an amazing attack on the
Government last night as they backed The Sun’s Booze Cruise campaign.
A union representing 19,000 officers demanded action to stop them
being made scapegoats for ministers’ policy. The Public and Commercial Services Union usually stays silent on
government issues, but hit out after months of complaints from Customs
officers who are finding it hard to carry out their duties. David Ash, of booze cruise campaign group ACCESS,
said: “This is the clearest sign yet that Customs officers themselves
are fed up with enforcing unlawful limits on booze and tobacco. This is
a major breakthrough. It’s only a matter of time before the Government
cracks.” The PCS defended Customs officers but demanded clearer guidelines to
ease their “difficulties”. European laws allow Brits to bring back unlimited alcohol and tobacco
from EU countries, but greedy Treasury officials have pressured Customs
to impose an artificial limit on shoppers. |
