Parish Legislation

Barbed Wire

This must be of a height of at least 6 feet from the road surface when it borders a public place

Bornements or Permits

A Bornement, (change of alignment) is required in respect of any building work within 9 metres from any public road. Application must be made in writing to the Constables. The fee is £15.

Cisterns, Wells and Boiler Pits

These must be covered or fenced in such a manner as to prevent any person from falling in accidently.

Quarries

These must be adequately protected by private land or fenced to ensure they are not a danger to the public. They are checked by the Constables who then report on their state to the Royal Court.

Dog Tax

The sum of £5 is payable in January of each year in respect of all dogs with the exception of dogs for blind and deaf persons

Hedges

Hedges bordering a public road must be cut back between the 1st and 15th June and between the 15th and 30th September each year, so they do not overhang a road below the height of 12 ft. Hedges should be cut in declivity, (sloping away from the road). By law all cuttings must be cleared immediately.

Streams

Most streams in the island are inspected twice a year after the 15th June and after the 30th September. Owners must therefore ensure that streams are free from overgrown vegetation and silt to enable the water to run freely.
