Notes:

As most cetacean species are not given specific statistics, the following are suggested for the above icons:

Note that cetacean sizes may be a bit off; conflicting statistics for sizes make creating these icons somewhat tricky!

As usual, the graphics above are made using a 48 pixels = 6 feet scale; this is good, for realism, but is also good because it helps us see very easily the difference between the size of, say, a human and a whale.

I hope to someday have an underwater campaign for Dungeon Craft; to that end, a lot of the above icons are interrelated. For example:

  • Sea elves often congregate with dolphins (and sometimes narwhals) and are often encountered together.
  • Dolphins often congregate with narwhals or swordfish.
  • Orcas (killer whales) do not usually congregate with sea elves, but sometimes enter alliances with them.
  • Merfolk often keep barracuda*.
  • Notable enemies of the sea elves include sahuagin, malenti, and ixitxachitls. (Sea elf icons can of course be doubled as malenti icons.)
  • Sahuagin often keep sharks.
* Icons for creatures marked with an asterisk have not been made yet!

There are far less freshwater icons so far, but they will hopefully have relationships soon as well:

  • Vodyanoi can summon electric eels.
  • Nixies keep giant gar* or giant pike* and can summon small fish*.
* Again, creatures marked with an asterisk have not been made yet!

Some people might (correctly) guess that I like cetaceans (and other sea mammals). As it is, I would hope that these icons are used as benign NPCs rather than as enemies. For realism, I would always give PCs the option of attacking if they dare, but... a 36 HD, 15-60 hp damage-dealing sperm whale should serve to punish such PCs!

Speaking of sperm whales... Although the above is what one might guess as their intended AD&D statistics (as the largest carnivorous whales that can bite), in fact, sperm whales only have (non-vestigial) teeth in their lower jaw... Their habits are not well-known, but it is possible that they simply swallow prey without chewing much. One interesting hypothesis is that they use powerful blasts of sound to paralyze their prey (such as giant squid) before swallowing them—that would be interesting to convert to AD&D rules...

Incidentally, I thought doing the sperm whale icon would be easy... but then I noticed that they are all wrinkly for most of their body! Arrgh...

Well, anyway, it appears that I have done too many real-life animal icons, including prehistoric versions (3 sharks, 2 mollusks, 5 cetaceans)! Time to do some more fantasy sea icons, perhaps...
